LITA-L: New Listserv for LITA LITA-L has been established to provide improved communication between LITA members, LITA officers and LITA staff. The new listserv will also serve as a mechanism for speedy dissemination of LITA forms, announcements and general information of interest to members, and will provide better access to member services centered in the LITA office. Members and nonmembers alike will find it a useful source of information on LITA activities, projects, and initiatives. LITA-L is currently unmoderated and open to anyone who wishes to subscribe. LITA-L is expected to contain regular monthly postings of a LITA FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), irregular postings of dated material that does not meet LITA Newsletter deadlines such as volunteer position announcements, calls for participation LITA and ALA programs, calls for task force or committee volunteers between regular appointment cycles, reminders before Annual and Midwinter, etc. It will also draw questions from members and potential members about LITA services and programs, tentative program ideas, calls for program partners, requests for program suggestions, speakers and ideas. LITA officers also expect to be able to use the list to solicit comment from the general membership on proposals, projects and routine reassessment or renewal activities. To subscribe to LITA-L, send an e-mail message to LISTSERV@UICVM.UIC.EDU with the following at the first line of text (not the subject line): SUBSCRIBE LITA-L Firstname Lastname Remember that the growing ALA Gopher is available by pointing to gopher.uic.edu (port 70), selecting "library'' from the main menu, then "American Library Association'' from the submenu. Co-Chairs Selected for 1996 LITA/LAMA National Conference Dennis Reynolds (CAPCON Library Network) and Terri Tomchyshyn (Canadian Clearinghouse on Disability Issues) have been named Co-chairs of the 1996 LITA/LAMA National Conference. The conference will be held October 13-16, 1996 in Pittsburgh, PA. The conference, the first ever held jointly by two ALA divisions, will focus attention on the convergence between management and technology in libraries, both in terms of managing the use and growth of technology as well as the use of technology to assist in library management. Reynolds and Tomchyshyn have many years of conference planning and management experience between them. Reynolds has headed the Washington, DC-area CAPCON Library Network since 1985, where he has provided leadership for a long-running series of continuing education workshops, as well as numerous conferences and meetings. Tomchyshyn, currently manager of an information and referral service on disability issues for the Department of Human Resources Development Canada, holds a Certificate of Education from the American Society of Association Executives and served five years as the Director of Professional Development for the Canadian Library Association. "We have selected two very enthusiastic and competent chairs,'' said Joan Clark, Head of Main Library of the Cleveland (OH) Public Library and Co-Chair of the Selection Task Force. "Their knowledge and experience will ensure a very successful conference.'' Nolan Pope, Associate Director for Automation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Co-Chair of the Selection Task Force, added, "We had a tremendously talented pool of applicants, which made the selection difficult. Reynolds and Tomchyshyn, though, have great awareness of technology and management, managing technology, and meeting planning. I am very pleased to have them on board.'' A Call for Participation, a Call for Volunteers, and an Exhibitor Prospectus for the 1996 conference are all being developed; mailings should begin in the fall of 1994. For more information about the conference, please contact Rob Carlson, LITA Deputy Executive Director and Conference Manager, c/o LITA, 50 E. Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611; (800) 545-2433, ext. 4270; Internet: rob.carlson@ala.org. LITA and LAMA Seek Volunteers for 1996 Joint Conference LITA and LAMA are seeking volunteers to serve on several conference planning committees now being formed. Volunteers are needed for the following committees: Program Planning, Local Arrangements, Exhibits Advisory, Conference Technology/Networking, and Evaluation. Volunteers must be able to attend all ALA Midwinter Meetings and Annual Conferences between now and the dates of the joint conference (October 13-16, 1996) and are expected to attend the conference itself. Some members of some committees may be required to travel to Pittsburgh and/or Chicago for essential meetings, but such travel will be reimbursed by the two divisions. Volunteers must be personal members of either LITA or LAMA (or both) by the time of appointment. Co-Chairs (one from each division) have been selected for the conference. They are: Dennis Reynolds (LITA), President, CAPCON Library Network, Suite 400, 1320 19th St., N.W. Washington, DC 20036, Internet: dreynold@capcon.net; and Terri Tomchyshyn (LAMA), Manager, Canadian Clearinghouse on Disability Issues, Suite 100, 25 Eddy Street Hull, Quebec K1A 0M5 Canada, Internet: ttom@resudox.net To become a part of this groundbreaking joint conference, please send a letter (mail or e-mail) to either Reynolds or Tomchyshyn expressing your willingness to be appointed, an indication of what area of conference planning you are interested in, and a brief explanation of your qualifications or other experience that might assist in your selection. Expressions of interest must be received by 5:00 p.m. EDT, September 30, 1994. Appointments will be made by November 1, 1994, and the committees will meet for the first time at ALA's Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 3-9, 1995. You may also contact Rob Carlson, LITA Deputy Executive Director and Conference Manager, with any questions or comments. Consultants in Library Automation LITA maintains a list of library automation consultants as a service to the profession, distributing it upon request to anyone. This is an unjuried list. The only requirement is that a consultant must have completed three consulting projects. This list includes only the consultant's or firm's name, address, phone and Internet address. Anyone who wishes to be listed should send the appropriate information to Tel Aviv Barbee, LITA Administrative Secretary, LITA Office, 50 E. Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611; (312) 280-4270; fax (312) 280-3257; Internet: Tel.Aviv.Barbee@ala.org. The list will be revised in October, and will then be available by mail, fax or on the ALA Gopher. ALA-PLAN Listserv Debuts for ALA Conference Program Planners In response to the ever-increasing need for ALA Conference program coordination, LITA's Program Planning Committee has launched ALA-PLAN, a listserv-based forum for sharing ideas and plans. ALA-PLAN is open to members of all ALA divisions and units who are involved in planning programs for ALA Annual Conferences. Conference program planners will find ALA-PLAN a fast, easy way to float topics for future programs, gather information on what other program planners are working on, find appropriate speakers and draw on the experience of those who may have done similar programs in the past. ALA-PLAN is an Internet listserv and will be moderated to ensure that only relevant postings appear. To join, send the following message to listserv@sun.cc.westga.edu (no subject line or signature file should be included): subscribe ala-plan [your full name] ALA-PLAN is one piece of an ongoing effort on the part of ALA Conference program planners to coordinate their activities to reduce duplication and simplify conference program attendance for ALA members. Other efforts include the very popular " Program Planning Faire,'' which debuted at ALA's 1994 Midwinter Meeting in Los Angeles. The Faire is a forum for program planners to learn the basics of sound program planning, share ideas and seek co-sponsorship from other ALA units. The Faire is being planned again for the 1995 Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia. For further information on ALA-PLAN or other LITA Program Planning Committee activities, please contact Rob Carlson at LITA, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611; (800) 545-2433, ext. 4270; Internet: rob.carlson@ala.org.
